We’re proud to announce that we, one of Nottingham’s most iconic cultural landmarks, have been shortlisted as one of just three finalists for Pub of the Year at the Nottinghamshire Tourism Awards 2026! This is a huge honour in a county home to hundreds of pubs, each with their own character and history.
Delivered by Visit Nottinghamshire, accredited by VisitEngland as the Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) for the region, the awards celebrate excellence in tourism and hospitality across the county.
With Nottinghamshire welcoming 34.96 million visitors in 2024/25, generating more than £2.53 billion in economic value, the recognition comes at a time when the city’s visitor economy is thriving.
Winners will be announced at a prestigious spring ceremony, with finalists in core categories given the potential to represent the county nationally at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.
A Victorian Music Hall, Alive with Purpose
Built in 1877 as a Victorian music hall, the Malt Cross remains one of the UK’s few surviving examples of its kind – never demolished or structurally altered. Over the decades, we have been a music venue, a coffee house, and now a not-for-profit pub and heritage space, with every pint and plate of food served contributing to the community.
Unlike many, the Malt Cross reinvests all of our bar and kitchen surplus into the YMCA Robin Hood Group, supporting young people and families across Nottinghamshire. Customers aren’t just enjoying a drink or meal – they’re part of something bigger. As one reviewer put it:
“It’s one of my favourite places in Nottingham. A former historic music hall, with many of its old features and glass vaulted roof, makes for a very atmospheric venue… The staff are always very helpful and friendly, making every visit a joy.”
Heritage Meets Hospitality
Today, we attract a vibrant mix of young professionals, students, families, creatives, tourists, and community groups, all drawn to its blend of history, hospitality, and heart. The launch of the Malt Cross Lager in 2025 – brewed with a Nottinghamshire-based brewery – is a perfect example of how we connect heritage with the present, offering something distinctly local.
Visitors consistently highlight the unique character of the space:
“The Malt Cross has been a staple since moving to Nottingham 12 years ago… Stunning venue but also super relaxed. Plenty of activities running throughout the week, have taken part in many quizzes over the years. A must-visit for both locals and tourists.”
Community at the Core
The Malt Cross is not just a pub; it’s a hub of community connection and creativity. Events like the annual Beer and Carols fundraiser bring people together in festive joy while raising money to provide Christmas dinners for YMCA residents. One of our attendee’s summed it up beautifully:
“A wonderful evening with family and friends! Travelling from Devon, this was our second-year attending! There’s nothing like singing these famously old Christmas tunes… Just look around the room. You’ll not find another crowd with this much happiness and joy.”
Our venue also pioneers initiatives like Cyndi Says Relax, a monthly event offering a safer social space for women and non-gender conforming people, showing a bold commitment to inclusivity and care.
Recognition Worth Celebrating
To be named among the top three pubs in Nottinghamshire for the Nottinghamshire Tourism Awards 2026 is an achievement in itself – and one that reflects everything the we represent: heritage, authenticity, community impact, inclusivity, and culture.
Speaking on this accomplishment, our General Manager Joel Lydamore shares:
“Being named alongside the best pubs in Nottinghamshire is a real honour for the team. It means a lot to know that what we’re building here is recognised and appreciated.”
At our heart, we open our doors each morning to make life in Nottingham that little bit better and being recognised for this mission is a source of immense pride.
For locals and visitors alike, our one-of-a-kind pub is a must-visit, where history, community and hospitality truly come together.
